In recent decades the quality of life of many patients has been considerably improved by the increased use of medical implants. As a consequence of the growing use of implants, a parallel trend to more infections can be observed.
Prostheses can harbour bacteria, but uncemented implants are unable to eliminate them because of the lack of antibiotics. To prevent biofi lm in such implants there is currently no safe antibiotic protection possible.
Latest data from the Norwegian Arthroplasty registers as well as a future outlook on solutions for infection prevention in uncemented arthroplasty will be discussed during this satellite symposium.
